Daily Life
The practical stuff.
Healthcare, groceries, services, and the everyday logistics of life in the county.
School district
Spencer County is served by Spencer County Public Schools. For enrollment, boundaries, programs, and performance data, the district website and the Kentucky Department of Education are the best primary sources to research yourself.
Healthcare
Primary care, urgent care, and pharmacy are available in Taylorsville. Major hospital systems — Baptist Health, UofL Health, and Norton Healthcare — are 30 to 45 minutes away in Louisville and Shelbyville.
Groceries & shopping
A full-service grocery in Taylorsville plus dollar stores and specialty shops. For bigger trips, the East End of Louisville, Shelbyville, and Mt. Washington are all a reasonable drive.
Dining
A range of local restaurants serving breakfast, barbecue, pizza, and burgers, plus seasonal lakeside spots. New options have continued to open as the county has grown.
Getting around
Most of the county is rural, so two vehicles are common. The main commuter routes are KY-55, KY-44, and the Snyder Freeway (I-265) connection into Louisville.
Public services
Taylorsville is the county seat, with the courthouse, fire department, library, and most county government services located within the city.
A Year in Spencer County
Four seasons, each with its own character.
Spring
Derby season in Louisville, dogwoods and redbuds across the county, the start of farmers market season in Taylorsville, and high school baseball at the park.
Summer
Long days on Taylorsville Lake, fireworks at the marina around the 4th, sweet corn at every roadside stand, and youth baseball under the lights.
Fall
Color along the lake roads, pumpkin patches and corn mazes, Friday night football at Spencer County High, and bourbon trail traffic picking up nearby.
Winter
Quiet mornings, an occasional snow that closes the schools and turns the hills white, Christmas lights along Main Street, and time to plan next summer.
