Relocating

Trading city limits for room to breathe.

Spencer County is one of the most popular destinations for Louisville-area families ready for a little more space and a little less hustle. Here's what to know before you make the move.

Every week I talk with families in Louisville who are starting to wonder if there's a different way to live: a place with land, a yard their kids can disappear into, a porch worth sitting on. For many of them, that place ends up being Spencer County.

Moving out of Louisville is a real decision, though, and it deserves real information. I've helped a lot of city families make this move, and I want yours to feel confident, whether you choose to do it or not.

Why People Move

What draws Louisville families here.

More space for your money

The same budget that buys a small bungalow in the Highlands or St. Matthews can often buy a four-bedroom home on an acre or more in Spencer County. For families needing room, the math is hard to ignore.

A walkable Main Street

Taylorsville offers a compact downtown with local shops, restaurants, and county services within a short stroll — the kind of Main Street you can park once and explore on foot.

Easy access back to the city

When you do need Louisville, you're not far. Many Spencer County residents commute into the East End, Jeffersontown, or downtown without it taking over their day.

Taylorsville Lake at your doorstep

Boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and one of the largest state parks in Kentucky — minutes from home, not a weekend trip away.

Lower cost of living

Property taxes, utility rates, and day-to-day costs tend to run lower than in Jefferson County. For retirees and growing families alike, that breathing room matters.

Plenty of local activities

From the Taylorsville farmers market to youth sports leagues, 4-H, and community events at the lake, there are many ways to get involved in local life.

The Commute Question

How far is "far," really?

Approximate drives to central Spencer County (Taylorsville) from common Louisville-area starting points. Actual times vary with traffic and route.

From Distance Typical Drive
Jeffersontown ~20 mi ~30 min
Middletown / Anchorage ~22 mi ~30 min
St. Matthews ~28 mi ~40 min
Downtown Louisville ~32 mi ~45 min
Louisville Int'l Airport (SDF) ~33 mi ~45 min

Things to Think Through

Honest answers to common questions.

Will my commute work?

Most Louisville-area employers are 30 to 45 minutes from central Spencer County via the Snyder Freeway and the Bluegrass Parkway. Test drive your actual commute at the actual time you would drive it — it's the single best way to know.

Where can I find information about the school district?

Spencer County is served by Spencer County Public Schools. For enrollment, school boundaries, programs, and performance data, the district website and the Kentucky Department of Education are the best primary sources. I do not provide opinions or characterizations of schools — I can point you to where to research them yourself.

Will I miss city amenities?

Honest answer: some, sometimes. But Spencer County has solid grocery stores, restaurants, healthcare, and shopping, and Louisville is close enough for the occasional concert or specialty errand. Many transplants say they go in to the city far less often than they expected to.

What about internet and utilities?

Internet quality varies meaningfully by location — fiber and cable are available in many areas, but pockets of the county still rely on fixed wireless or satellite. If you work from home, this is something to confirm before you fall in love with a specific address. I can help you check.

City water and sewer, or well and septic?

Properties in Taylorsville and parts of the county have city water and sewer. Many rural properties use a well and septic system. Both work fine when properly maintained — we will make sure any property you consider is thoroughly inspected.

A Tour, On Your Schedule

Want to see the area in person?

One of the best things I do for relocating clients is a half-day driving tour of Spencer County — the lake, the parks, the grocery runs, the actual commute. No homes on the schedule, no pressure to buy. Just the lay of the land.
